Worst Comic Book Movies Of All Time – Feb. 2011
Daredevil (2003)

This comic book based movie has created debates among hardcore fanboys and fangirls.  Why?  Some enjoy the movie, where others hate it. I guess I would fall somewhere in the middle.  I mean it is entertaining, but it could have been so much better.  Maybe its Ben Affleck and the way he portrays Matt Murdock/Daredevil.  He does that horrible thing actors do when playing heroes, making the voice ‘gritty’.  I feel that it’s silly and doesn’t help with the movie’s “serious” tone.  Also his narration seems laughable.  I cannot take him seriously.  Or is it Jennifer Garner and the way she makes Elektra Natchios seem mousy until the sad ending of her father. Spoiler? Whoops…  There are other stars. We have Colin Farrell as Bullseye, one of the evil villains as well as Michael Clarke Duncan who plays Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin.  Then we have the lovable “sidekick” to Matt, Foggy Nelson played by Jon Favreau.  Young Matt learns about abilities.

So here is the main premise of the story.  Matt loses his sight at a young age to a chemical spill, but his other senses become superhuman. Perfect idea for a super hero and you know, the comic does really well when they aren’t killing him.  So we watch as Matt transforms into Daredevil, Man without Fear, and proves just that.  His dad is murdered because he won’t throw a fight, and Matt vows to take down the Kingpin, who took so much from him.

I don’t know. I find the whole movie trying to be dark, but the side jokes and funny anecdotes takes away from that, and it is hard to get back to the “dark” side.  By day Matt is a lawyer, trying to clean up the streets the right way, but to those evil people that get away, he takes his vengeance as Daredevil.

His costume also just seems silly when you see it in any type of light.  I know he is the devil, and the devil is red but sometimes he comes across as looking silly.  It reminds me of an S&M club/Power Ranger outfit.  Not sure red is the best color to fight crime in the middle of the night. But I am not a fashion expert.

I mean the fight scenes are rather pretty and well choreographed.  I just feel like the movie lacks depth. I don’t know, and I could be wrong but it is my opinion.  Of course, most people enjoyed the director’s cut that has a lot more in it, but we are not talking about that one.

Some of the silliness begins when Matt meets Elektra. The playground fight to get her name?  Come on. That is just… silly.

I know a lot of people had a problem with the skin color of the Kingpin in this movie. To me that really didn’t matter since I thought that Duncan did a rather good job.  I mean he is a big man and that is a big role to fill. I just thought of this as a different kingpin.

Now, Farrell’s take on Bullseye doesn’t hit the right mark. See what I did there? JOKES! Anyway, he just seems too corny or hammy. I know he is supposed to be crazy, but this goes beyond that to were you couldn’t believe this guy if you wanted to.

The movie really does have its ups and downs.  Personally I like it better when Matt is on the screen and not Daredevil.  That may have something to do with the fact that I can see Ben as Matt but not as Daredevil.  Or I really do like the interactions with Matt and Elektra. Maybe because I am a girl and I like love stories, but we know that this movie doesn’t really end on a high note.

The movie finally turns when Elektra thinks that Daredevil killed her father, when it was really Bullseye, so we see her train and head out to defeat him.  Epic fight scenes occur and Elektra meets her end. Or does she?
(No she doesn’t, she has her own movie, remember?).

See that last scene was actually in the comic book.  That’s pretty cool I have to admit.

Overall, I just feel like the movie falls short.  Yes the visual effects for Matt are pretty good, but most of the acting is just bad. Even with some of the nice fight scenes, they manage to make it corny with the dialogue during and after the fights.  I mean, I would recommend you watch the movie once, just for your own opinion, and then watch the director’s cut.

So, The Man without Fear actually showed no fear since they released this version in the theaters. Zing!
