There are a few different types of horror movie fans. You have your slasher fans, supernatural fans, and lastly, the FUCKIN zombie fans! Zombies rising from the depths of the grave, coming back to life, to munch on the living. The king of the zombie genre, the man that mainstreamed it all, is the one and only Mr. George A Romero. The impact of his Dead films knows no bounds, and what started in Pittsburgh, PA in 1968 has over time, stretched as far as Japan and Europe. It’s because of this international interest and acclaim that we have the documentary ” Fan Of The Dead.”
Fan Of The Dead is a 52 minute buddy road trip documentary made by Romero’s Dead fans for Romero’s Dead Fans. It’s the story of a few friends from France and Germany, that travel to the Pittsburgh Comic Con in 2007 to witness, document and meet the cast of their favorite movies, Night Of The Living Dead (1968) and Dawn Of The Dead (1979). Instantly you know that these guys are just like you and I, pure zombie fans of the proper sort from the get go. French and German zombie nutzoids wondering around in Pittsburgh, barely able to speak a lick of english, but yet they walk around their hotel at night, pretending to be members of the legion of Romero’s blueberry’d Undead. The effect is heartfelt and fun.
Along with meeting the cast of their favorite films, the director, Frenchman Nicholas Garreau, spent time pre trip searching out for 3 months, looking at aerial photography of the PA area, for Romero’s original filming locations. The group are taken on a private tour of the Monroe ville Mall by the cast of Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, and shown where the film magic took place. They unearth the location of the original cemetery used in Night Of The Living Dead, the rooftop used in the beginning sequence of Dawn Of The Dead, and even seek out the house Tom Savini used, to film his glorious remake, of the Romero classic, Night Of The Living Dead in 1990. The young filmmakers do a wonderful job of creating excitement, putting you WHERE they are. And this sends chills down your spine, as you’re there discovering these amazing historic film locations with them. As a mid westerner, Fan Of The Dead, makes you wanna jump in your hot rod, and ZOOM ZOOM down into Pittsburgh, so you can place your feet in the same spot! I’ve got my keys in the ignition right now!
