I bet you thought the scream queens of yesterday where either gone or quiet in retirement? Well, yeah they kinda are actually… But what you may or may not know is that there is a whole new generation of queens that are dominating the market via low budget direct to home video productions.
Something To Scream About, hosted by the one and only scream queen madame, Brinke Stevens, details the new generation of the scream queen. The documentary released by Tempe Entertainment, J.R. Bookwalter’s company (director of the amazing, The Dead Next Door) showcases this new strain of sirens. Most of the girls have been working for the likes of Bookwalter, or Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman, or suffering the perils of the uber uber low budget production. The film is insightful, as there is no happy little sugar coated candy on the top of the low budget cake. The girls express their concern with nudity in film, being used by film-makers, and also the severe lack of money they are making!
The film while well done, comes across as a sort of VH-1 Behind The Music. But that’s ok. It’s informative, interesting, and fun. Scream Queen Goddess, Julie Strain also appears in the film, and she comes across as very bitchy, rude, and bitter. Overall, Something To Scream About is an excellent film, and well worth the purchase… Check it out!
