The “G-Man” cometh! G. Gordon Liddy stars in what was really a first for him and he did a good job as the Anti-hero Head of a new Police Team known as “SQUAD” whose ultra-secret job it is to clean up the streets vigilante-style via a team of cops whose minds are being controlled to facilitate brutal street-justice (then pull their own corks before they’re caught!)
Wings Hauser, best known for his usually-villainous roles in 80’s and early 90’s B-movies, plays the lead as a conflicted cop who has found himself assigned to “SQUAD” much to the chagrin of his smokin’-hot girlfriend Kristen (played by the chesty Roberta Vasquez). Despite the saxophone-music in the background and clearly 1980’s-era backgrounds which told me that perhaps this film was made well-prior to its release date of 1990, STREET ASYLUM exceeds the average B-movie action flick by its core-storyline which is slightly abreast of the “vigilante-cop” genre which gave us 1987’s ROBOCOP.
Wings Hauser was a good actor in his day and he pulled off this role convincingly, making it a better film overall by his tense portrayal of the character Arliss Ryder.(He was once Linda Blair’s Beau!) The shapely Playboy Playmate (Miss Nov. ’84) Roberta Vasquez takes a romantic and action role in this film, even getting to use karate in one scene. This could have been a launching role for Roberta as an actress if STREET ASYLUM had not ended up in what some in the Industry refer to as “B-movie hell”.
This one is close to a sci-fi story with action “vigilante cop” subplot and gets my kudos for its unique theme showing cops used as mindless enforcers and for the added appearance of the skull-that-talks G. Gordon Liddy along with a healthy serving of the Latina-Suprema Roberta Vasquez! STREET ASYLUM gets a thumbs-up with a shot of tequila when the credits role……
